About: Planting trees in tropical regions is crucial for mitigating climate change, preserving biodiversity, regulating water systems, protecting soil, and providing economic benefits. However, the terrain in tropical regions is complex, with an uneven surface, slippery nature, dense vegetation, and deep slopes, posing challenges for conventional tree-planting robots. In this project, we will leverage cutting-edge AI and sensor technologies to develop next-generation robot perception systems while considering the robustness, adaptability, and flexibility required for complex tropical terrain. The new robot will improve safety standards and create high-value jobs in operation and maintenance. The project will have far-reaching environmental, economic, and social benefits.

Project: Detection of animals with low-cost radar

About: This project will investigate the potential of millimeter-wave imaging radar for the detection of animals in airspace. These radar systems have been developed for the automotive industry but have yet to be assessed for their capability as a detection tool for biological targets such as insects, birds, and bats. There is a huge market gap for low-cost biological sensors in industries such as agriculture, environmental management and conservation, and human health. This project will provide a proof of concept that can then be used to generate further funding and a start-up to further develop this product, with the intention to deploy a network of units as a sensor array.

It will analyze the data collected and provide early warning alerts to medical professionals and caregivers. By demonstrating the feasibility of this innovative solution, the project seeks to improve the quality of life for older adults in remote areas and provide peace of mind to caregivers and family members.

About: This project aims to revolutionize the theory and practice of sensing and monitoring by developing novel Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things technologies. This project expects to generate new knowledge in Artificial Intelligence of Things by combining sensing, machine learning, and big data analytics. Expected outcomes of this project include novel low-cost sensing methods and new hybrid machine-learning models for predictive sensory data analytics. This should provide significant benefits, such as substantially reduced operating and service costs and improved accuracy for real-time monitoring in the fields where cheap-to-implement and easy-to-service monitoring systems over large geographical areas are imperative.
